That a documentary video is the highlight of this exhibition says much about Reynolds an expert technician rather than master painter. Assuaging fine detail his still life’s achieve an impressive realism through use of shade and contrast. Landscapes, both urban and rural are similarly carefully structured and precise. Reynolds’ portraits disappoint, despite a realistic portrayal there seems to be a lack of empathy between sitter and artist. One is left better informed though not inspired.
