Matilda (3.5/5)

It's easy to see why Matilda won seven Olivier's: sharp lyrics, neatly executed choreography, a jaunty and well-lit set. Yet, lacking that magic spark that makes a good show great. Perhaps it’s Dahl’s storytelling, ideal for youngsters with horrible adults outwitted by smart kids but leaving the dark undertones underdeveloped for an older audience. For families brought upon Dahl, Matilda is a very good introduction to theatre but lacking depth for more experienced hands.
