The Day of the Doctor 3D (4.5/5.0)
50th Anniversary
Hoyts, Westfield Carousel, Perth
24th November 2013
Cast: Tom Baker, John Hurt, Matt Smith, David Tennant [Dr Who], Billie Piper [Rose]
Writer/Producer: Steven Moffat
Intelligent, gripping story celebrating 50 years of Dr Who and closing out Moffat's morality tale - Doctor executioner of Timelords and Daleks. Hurt brought a deep sadness to the executioner's role, elegantly counter-posed by Rose's conscience. Smith and Tennant, a little too perfect couple - a change in style to Peter Capaldi is due. They needed River Song to fight over, not a limp Elizabeth I. Tom Baker's surprise appearance a fitting tribute to the "classic" years with a perfectly pitched delivery of a wise, yet adventurous Doctor.
The cinema trailed Dr Who with a witty warning from Sontaran Commander Kaagh and a silly one from Tennant and Smith, the 3D was effective rather than dramatic - and the audience loved it all the same.
