Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (4.5/5.0)
Perth Concert Hall
22nd November 2013
Chief Conductor: Mariss Jansons
Piano: Yefim Bronfman
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.3 in C Minor Op.37
Strauss Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life)
There was an extraordinary sensuality between piano and orchestra, Jansons leading his musicians in a delicately balanced response to Bronfman's masterful caress of the keyboard. Strauss' autobiographical poem demands much of orchestra and audience with its fluctuating intensity and moods, using tones to imagine a Hero's life. The Orchestra was up for the challenge, principal violinist Liviu Prunaru playing the solo sections with great subtlety. A difficult second half in no way diminished the pleasure of the first.
Art and About: a personal blog comprising "On Show" arts reviews (all in 75 words or less) and travel diaries. I write about what matters to me. The Arts matter because they offer joy and sadness, thrills and insights. Travel matters because like the Arts it broadens the mind and soul with new experiences.
