Onegin 4.0/5
The
Australian Ballet
Opera
Theatre, Sydney Opera House
Choreography: John Cranko. Music: Tchaikovsky (arr.Stolze).
Cast: Andrew Killian (Onegin), Madeleine Eastoe (Tatiana), Daniel Gaudiello
(Lensky)
Onegin is so
well delivered that the technical skill and characterization of the dancers is
easy to overlook. Stolze’s selection of
Tchaikovsky pieces is well-suited to the choreography and storyline. Without the surging beauty of Swan Lake
Onegin lacks the added magic of fantasy.
Though this is a masterful and classical production centred on the
conceited Onegin and his tumultuous impact on the lives of others it is a
somewhat morose story.
