Day (04) 29 December: emerging from jet lag

Despite a lumpy night in the middle of which I read the paper for 90 minutes, I awake refreshed for the first time and dive into a workout. I feel a need to use some energy today or I will not sleep tonight. I think the jet lag is passing.

Having got the physical bit done I move to mental energy and get this blog up-to-date before getting out the Dutch language books. A personal success for me in the Netherlands was learning Dutch. I have never learnt a language, even my knowledge of English is somewhat shaky. I am of an age when teaching grammar was out of fashion and foreign languages were for the clever kids. Learning Dutch was initially daunting and came with the additional challenge of having to learn grammar for Dutch whilst trying to figure out what in meant in English. Fortunately some good teachers held my hand and in three years I reached level A2, a good tourist standard. Had we stayed I would have challenged myself to take the Inburgeringsexamen.

Meals today went from one extreme to the other. Far too heavy breakfast and dinner, very healthy lunch. The whole dining thing will be subject of analysis after further data digestion.
