Jackson’s technical achievement in adding colour to archive WW1 film is phenomenal but it is the narrative of soldiers’ memoirs that give this impressive documentary its intimacy. A story of life before, during and after the trenches told by those who were there. Warfare, shocking injuries and death recounted matter of factly almost as if on the sporting field. Pain comes on returning home to unemployment in a world that does not yet recognise PTSD.
