Bourne creates a taunt psychological narrative within the traditional Swan Lake dysfunctional royal parent/child relationship. The black swan becomes the Prince’s nightmare rival for his mother’s affections, the swans are aggressive rutting cobs. Tension builds to Act 3’s climatic Ball then dissipates somewhat in Act 4’s overlong resolution. The choreography is bold and dynamic, diving into musical theatre to drive the story when convention turns to national dances. A thrilling, dramatic ballet.
