Sometimes pre-reading the programme notes matters, this was one of those occasions. Not doing so left me unappreciative of the subtleties of Terry Riley's minimalist classical composition 'Salome Dances for Peace', which draws on many musical traditions. The score is more about energy levels than rhythm and narrative and can be difficult to follow even when well-balanced across the Ruysdael foursome. Whilst accessible, knowledge and concentrated listening are required for a full appreciation.
