A Street Car Named Desire (2.5/5)
Black Swan Theatre Company
State Theatre Centre of WA
Sunday 6th April 2014
Author: Tennessee Williams
Director: Kate Cherry
Cast: Sigrid Thornton (Blanche), Nathaniel Dean (Stanley), Jo Morris (Stella), Luke Hewitt (Mitch)
A disappointing production neither sultry nor smouldering with tension, which is a shame as Tennessee Williams' dialogue is sharp and biting. The trouble was Dean's inability to distinguish between Stanley's feelings for his wife and those for her sister. Blanche may be the lead character, but the story lies in how those around her react to her slowly unravelling delusions. Hewitt's Mitch largely got this, Dean didn't and so left both sisters somewhat adrift. Credit though for the set design, lighting and music that captured the seedy side of New Orleans far more successfully than the cast.
