Fences (4.0/5.0)
Company
Duchess Theatre, Londom
20 July 2013
Director: Paulette Randall, Writer: August Wilson
Cast: Lenny Henry [Troy Maxson], Tanya Moodie [Rose Maxson], Colin McFarlane [Jim Bono], Peter Bankole [Lyons Maxson], Ashley Zhangazha [Cory Maxson]
Troy Maxson is an affable yet troubled man shaped by a violent Father, prison and racial discrimination, struggling in his relationships with family, friends, and death. Henry is in full and exemplary command of the emotional highs and lows, his scenes with wife Rose and old-friend Jim particularly powerful. Set in 1950's America Wilson's subject is topical post-Trayvon Martin, which may not be appreciated by a British cast and audience though this production will be.
