Cape Town Opera (3.5/5)
Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne
9th September 2012
Conductor: Albert Horne
David Fanshawe: African Sanctus
Mandela Trilogy (excerpts) Act 1: Allan Stephenson, Act 2 Mike Campbell, Act 3 Peter Louis van Dijk
A percussion driven Sanctus, a jazzed-up operetta - European forms with an exciting, if under-developed, African flavour. Recorded African song was a disappointment, surely these talented singers could master native languages. Fanshawe successfully replaces solemnity with energy, though the band overwhelmed with its enthusiasm. "Trilogy", deprived of staging, showed off good voices and suggested the full show is worth seeing.
Art and About: a personal blog comprising "On Show" arts reviews (all in 75 words or less) and travel diaries. I write about what matters to me. The Arts matter because they offer joy and sadness, thrills and insights. Travel matters because like the Arts it broadens the mind and soul with new experiences.
