Seventeenth year of RnR in Melbourne for off-season cane cutters turns sour: mateship and female friendship are questioned.  Not sure about this legendary Australian drama.  The vast stage gives the actors room to play yet diminishes their suffication; the characters are sharp in too many senses.  Well worthy in 1955, still significant to theatre buffs and HSC students; it is questionable what this work says directly to today’s audience.  In need of updating – fly-in/fly-out anyone?
