year of RnR in Melbourne for off-season cane cutters turns sour: mateship and
female friendship are questioned. Not
sure about this legendary Australian drama.
The vast stage gives the actors room to play yet diminishes their
suffication; the characters are sharp in too many senses. Well worthy in 1955, still significant to
theatre buffs and HSC students; it is questionable what this work says directly
to today’s audience. In need of updating
– fly-in/fly-out anyone?
