Pieter de Hooch is a significant 17th-century Dutch artist. His domestic scenes in courtyards and private houses reveal life in South Holland. Skilful use of sunlight leaps from the canvas creating highlights and sightlines, penetrating each picture through archways and doorways. Pleasing works without quite catching the finesse of Vermeer. The labelling is informative on artist and sitters, at times light on technique. A welcome change from the usual Golden Age artists.
