The Red Shoes (3.5/5)

A light ballet, an operetta or musical without words. Knowledge of the movie is useful, the central conflict and narrative unclear until late in the first half (annoyingly the programme lacks synopsis and cast list). The choreography and execution whilst light on drama has many humorous asides. Ingenious use of a revolving proscenium neatly presents the story on stage and behind the scenes. Red Shoes is enjoyable, non-taxing, holiday entertainment rather than a classic.
