Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (3.5/5)
John Golden Theatre, New York
Thursday 27 June 2013
Director: Nicholas Martin, Writer: Christopher Durang
Cast: David Hyde Pierce [Vanya], Kristine Nielsen [Sonia], Sigourney Weaver [Masha], [Spike] Billy Magnussen, Shalita Grant [Cassandra], Liesel Allen Yeager [Nina]
Durang cleverly uses Chekhov characters to create an absurd, squabbling, family of neurotic siblings. Egged on by their soothsayer housekeeper (Cassandra), Masha's toyboy (Spike) and the doting Nina, the three exchange insults as they face the prospect of old-age, unfulfilled dreams and in Masha's case a fading movie career. Hyde Pierce and Nielsen are terrific, Weaver struggles with few good lines. Classical comedy drama almost at its best.
