VANCOUVER WINTER OLYMPICS: REFLECTIONS

Being in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics was in the words of Jacques Rogge an “excellent” experience. It is always very easy to find things to gripe about, but what would be the point when the overall experience was rewarding in so many ways? Some things can always be done better and smarter, but that’s for the next Games to learn from. So here is final selection of reflections on our excellent Olympic experience.

A highlight for both of us was meeting Eric Stojker on the bus; it made the following figure skating so much more interesting and certainly Carole’s favourite event. My favourite event: ski jumping. It was amazing to see those men fly on a beautifully day. The cultural program was superb and diverse, the neighbourhood live sites buzzed and catching up with Jasper and Jenny was a delight.

Canada put its own stamp on these Games that said we’re good enough to perform on the world stage but we don’t have to shout about it with USA razzmatazz, British self-importance or Australian brashness. Canadians have every right to stand a bit taller after these Games, but probably won’t.

Let’s go Canada go.
